How BBQ Sazz got started:

In the summer of 2018, my husband suffered a massive heart attack and one month later had a brain bleed. After months in the hospital, he came home to a very grateful family and has spent his time since then working on recovering. HIs family and friends see him as a miracle, a blessing, and an inspiration as he navigates challenges in his daily life. He has lost most of his vision, some cognitive functioning, and his verbal filter! He can talk and talk and talk!

A couple of summers after his injury, I was home with him and he talked my ear off from the time he woke up until he went to bed. I needed to find something that he could do to keep him busy. The tricky part was that it had to be safe for him and he needed to be able to be successful. I said, "How about you come up with a recipe for amazing barbecue sauce! Wouldn't that be fun if I made your recipe and everyone would come over and enjoy grilling out with us?" I thought I was being really clever giving him a task that would certainly take weeks and weeks to complete, keeping his mind busy and buying me a little bit of quiet time.

But, as soon as I finished the question, he rattled off a bunch of ingredients. "I need orange juice, lemonade, liquid smoke..." he said, and went on to list a bunch of things as if they had been on the tip of his tongue his whole life.

So, I purchased the ingredients and made the sauce as he directed me from his beloved reclining chair in the living room. And, that very first attempt is what we call 'Liquid Gold BBQ Sazz'! That's right! What was meant to be a task that would keep him busy was completed to perfection in one day.

As he continues to be a blessing to everyone who meets him, I make his BBQ Sazz! He loves to hear how much people are enjoying it and he feels proud that he is the man behind the Sazz! He is unable to make the sauce on his own, but I am happy to take on a task that brings such happiness to him and enjoyment to those who are looking for a barbecue sauce that is sweet and smokey with just enough bite!

We are so grateful for everyone who continues to support him through his journey and I am proud to donate 10% of the proceeds of our BBQ Sazz sales to the Brain Injury Alliance.
